Free calls
Free online calls from a browser: what is really free in 2026
TL;DR
Free online calls come in three kinds: calls between users of the same app (WhatsApp Web, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams), free calls to US and Canadian numbers for people who live in the US (Google Voice) or the US and Canada (TextNow) [1][2], and web dialers with daily caps (PopTox, Call2Friends). I found no service that calls any number in any country free and without limits. Past those caps, calls to phones are paid by the minute.
Key facts
- From the US, almost all Google Voice calls to US and Canadian numbers are free, but Google Voice is available only in the US and new numbers need an ID check [3][1][4]. Checked .
- PopTox needs no sign-up [5], allows 5 free calls a day to the same number [6] and shows the shared caller ID 218-414-1141 [7]. Checked .
- Call2Friends allows one or two free calls a day per IP address, with 120 seconds of talk time to the US and 180 to the UK [8][9]. Checked .
- WhatsApp Web calls, announced on , are free but reach only WhatsApp users and call-link guests, and are still rolling out [10][11][12]. Checked .
Which online calls are actually free?
Three kinds of online calls cost nothing. Calls between users of the same app are free and rarely capped. Calls to ordinary US and Canadian numbers are free on Google Voice and TextNow, but only for people in the US (and Canada, for TextNow). For callers anywhere else, the only free route to a real phone is a web dialer with a daily allowance; beyond it, calls to phones are paid per minute.
What decides the price is whether the other person needs the same app or their ordinary phone rings. A call to a real phone leaves the internet at a gateway and enters the phone network (PSTN), and someone pays for that leg, so free calls to phones come with a limit: a country, a daily cap or a few minutes.
| Kind of free | Rings a real phone? | The real limit | What sign-up needs | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| App-to-app calls | No: the other person needs the same app or a call link | Few caps on 1:1 calls; free group meetings stop at 60 minutes on Meet and Teams [13][14] | A mobile number for WhatsApp and Telegram [15][16]; a Google account for Meet [13] | WhatsApp Web, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams (free), Telegram Web |
| Region-limited free calling | Yes, US and Canadian numbers | Google Voice is US-only [1]; TextNow is for US and Canadian residents [2] | Google Voice: a phone number and an ID check; TextNow: an account, which its sign-up page sends you to the app to create | Google Voice, TextNow |
| Capped free web dialers | Yes, in selected countries | Call2Friends: one or two calls a day per IP address [8]; PopTox: 5 calls a day to the same number [6]; Globfone: a daily credit for a short call [17] | Nothing (PopTox, Call2Friends) or email, SMS and a card check (Globfone) | PopTox, Call2Friends, Globfone |
One-off trial minutes are left out: they are a taste, not a free service.
Which services call phone numbers for free?
Two groups. If you live in the US (or Canada, for TextNow), Google Voice and TextNow call US and Canadian numbers free from a browser tab. If you live elsewhere or need another country, free web dialers such as PopTox and Call2Friends reach real mobiles and landlines, but with daily caps, two- or three-minute free calls on Call2Friends and a shared caller ID on PopTox.
Google Voice and TextNow: free if you live in the right country
Google's help says that from the US almost all calls to US and Canadian numbers are free, in Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari [3]. The catch is access: Google Voice is only available in the US [1], sign-up sends a code to a phone number [18], and new numbers can't call until an identity check is done [4]. Calls abroad use prepaid credit [19].
TextNow includes free unlimited US and Canadian calls [20], paid for by in-app ads [21], and works in a browser [22], but only for US and Canadian residents [2]. When I opened its sign-up page on , it sent me to the app download, so expect to install the app once.
Its international page also lists calls to Mexico and the UK as free, but starts by telling you to download the app [23], and I found nothing saying those calls work from the web client. More in my TextNow explainer.
Free web dialers: real phones, short calls
When I loaded PopTox's homepage on , its dialpad appeared with no login; the site says it needs no sign-up or payment [5] and lists the US, the UK, India and Mexico as free [24]. Its rates page caps free use at 5 calls a day to the same number [6]. I found no published limit on call length.
Call2Friends allows a free call once a day without registration, 1–2 in some areas [8], with 120 seconds of talk time to US numbers and 180 seconds to the UK [9].
Globfone's free calling now needs a verified email, a phone number confirmed by SMS and a payment card checked through Stripe, which is not charged [17][25]. The daily free boost covers "a short call of a few minutes" [17].
The table adds the app-to-app options for comparison.
| Service | Free option | Calls phone numbers | Sign-up needs | Who can sign up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Voice | Yes, personal plan, calling from the US[26] | US, Canadian and international numbers[3] | Phone number for a text code, plus ID check[4] | Personal accounts: US only[1] |
| TextNow | Yes, funded by ads[21] | US and Canada free, other countries on credit[23] | Google, Apple, Facebook or email login[27] | US and Canada residents only[2] |
| PopTox | Yes: same number up to 5 times a day[6] | Mobiles and landlines; 246 countries claimed[24] | None for free calls[5] | No country limit published (unverified) |
| Call2Friends | Yes: 1 or 2 short calls a day per IP[8] | Mobiles and landlines worldwide[8] | None for free calls; email for paid[8] | No limit published; free calls vary by country[28] |
| Globfone | Yes: a few minutes a day, ad-funded[17] | Mobiles and landlines in supported countries[25] | Email, SMS-verified phone and a card check[29] | Depends on country and IP; no list[30] |
| Yes, no time limit[10] | WhatsApp contacts and link guests only[31] | Mobile number; web client linked by QR code[15] | Any mobile number; country blocks not checked | |
| Google Meet | Yes: 1:1 up to 24 h, groups 60 min[13] | No phone numbers on personal accounts[32] | A Google account[13] | Any Google account; country limits not checked |
| Microsoft Teams (free) | Yes: 1:1 up to 30 h, groups 60 min[14] | Teams users and link guests only[33] | A Microsoft account (steps not checked) | Microsoft account; country limits not checked |

Free phone calls online with no sign-up: what still works
Only two services I checked let you call a real phone with no account at all: PopTox and Call2Friends. Both trade the sign-up for daily limits, and PopTox shows a shared number instead of yours [7]. Neither asks for your phone number, which matters if you have no SIM: Google Voice, WhatsApp and Telegram all need one before you can call [18][15][16].
This is the routine I would follow on a free web dialer, based on what the PopTox and Call2Friends pages show and say. I did not place calls, so I can't promise that a free call connects today.
- Open the dialer in a current browser: PopTox names Chrome, Safari and Firefox on a PC, Mac or smartphone [5]; Call2Friends asks for the latest Chrome or Firefox [8].
- Allow the microphone when the browser asks, or the page can't send your voice.
- Pick the destination country, then type the number. Free talk time is set per destination [9].
- Warn the person first: PopTox shows 218-414-1141 on every call [7].
- Say the important part first: a free Call2Friends call to the US stops at 120 seconds [9].
- If Call2Friends refuses the call, its daily allowance, counted per IP address, is probably used up [8]; PopTox stops free calls to a number after 5 a day [6].
Guest links are the other no-sign-up route. Since , anyone can open a WhatsApp call link in a computer browser, type a name and join a call of up to 32 people once the host admits them, but only a WhatsApp user can create the link [11]. Microsoft Teams (free) meetings work the same way, free for up to 60 minutes [14].
Nothing here needs a download, only a supported browser and a microphone. For headsets and microphone permissions, see my step-by-step guide to calling from a laptop.
Free browser calls between apps
If the person you want to reach already uses WhatsApp, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Telegram, the call is free and runs in a browser tab. On a free personal account, none of them rings an ordinary landline or mobile, so they solve the cost problem only when both sides use the same service. WhatsApp Web is the newest entry: browser calling was announced on .
- WhatsApp Web: voice and video, 1:1 and group, end-to-end encrypted, "with no time limits and at no cost" [10]. The help centre still says the feature is rolling out gradually [12], and you need an account registered with a mobile number [15].
- Google Meet: free 1:1 calls of up to 24 hours on a personal Google account [13]. Dialling a phone number from Meet works only in meetings organised through a Google Workspace account [32].
- Microsoft Teams (free): 1:1 calls between Teams users of up to 30 hours [14], but no calling plans for phone numbers on the free version [33].
- Telegram Web: Telegram's FAQ describes end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls [16], and the official web client's code has calling switched on [34], though its help pages don't cover web calls. You log in with your mobile number [16].
WhatsApp's calling help offers no way to ring a landline or a mobile that isn't on WhatsApp; every page I read describes calls to WhatsApp contacts or link guests [31]. My notes on WhatsApp calls in the browser cover setup and rollout.
Skype is no longer an option: Microsoft retired it on and moved users to Teams (free) [33]. I cover the shutdown in what became of Skype.
Can you call any number free and without limits?
No. I found no service that calls any phone number in any country free and without a cap. Unlimited free calling exists in two narrow forms: app-to-app calls, and calls to US and Canadian numbers for people in the US (Google Voice) or the US and Canada (TextNow). Elsewhere, "unlimited" means a paid plan and "free" means a short daily allowance.
Google Voice comes closest, but only from the US: almost all calls to US and Canadian numbers are free [3], a few cost $0.01 a minute [35], and calls abroad are paid. TextNow's free plan includes unlimited US and Canadian calls [20] for residents of those two countries [2].
On web dialers, "unlimited" is a subscription: PopTox sells it from $10 a month for 49 countries on its plans page [36], while its older rates page says 56 countries for the same price [6].
Offers of a 5-minute or 1-minute free call are samples, not a free service. I track which ones still exist, and how long they really last, in my note on free trial minutes.
What free calls cost you in other ways
Free web dialers and free numbers are paid for somehow: with ads, with a caller ID that people don't answer, or with data the service keeps. These are the catches I found in their own terms and help pages on .
- Caller ID. PopTox shows the same number, 218-414-1141, on every call [7]. Globfone shows the number you verified by SMS [30]. A number the other person doesn't recognise may simply go unanswered.
- Ads. TextNow's free level runs on in-app ads [21]; its terms forbid blocking them and allow cancelling an account inactive for more than a year [2].
- Logs. Call2Friends records the number called, the date and the duration of each call, while saying it does not record call content [37].
- Old paperwork. PopTox's terms date from and say data may be transferred unencrypted [38]; Call2Friends' FAQ still mentions Adobe Flash [39].
- Emergencies. Google Voice's help says you can't make emergency calls with it [3], and WhatsApp's terms exclude access to emergency services [15]. Keep a mobile or landline for 911, 112 or 999; more in my note on 911 and 112 over VoIP.
For what a free dialer can see and what to check before you use one, read my checks on free calling websites.
When paying a few cents beats free
Paying makes sense when the free limits get in the way: you live outside the US and Canada, you need more or longer calls than the free caps allow, or you call mobiles abroad often. Pay-per-minute browser dialers then cost cents a minute. The table shows the lowest published rate per service for three common destinations.
| Service | US | UK mobile | India |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Voice | $0[35] | $0.01[19] | $0.02[19] |
| TwinPhone | $0.02[43] | $0.12[43] | $0.08[43] |
| Yolla | from $0.01[44] | from $0.10[45] | from $0.0239[46] |
| Call2Friends | $0.016[47] | $0.581[48] | $0.039[49] |
Per minute, lowest published rate on the date checked. Scroll sideways on a phone.
Google Voice's rates apply only to its US users [1]. TwinPhone, which sponsors this site, covers the case where you have no US number and no SIM to verify: it calls landlines and mobiles from Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave or Safari, and sign-up takes an email or a Google account, with no card and no phone number [50]. It describes that setup on its page about calling without a SIM card.
Its weak points are real. There are no free calls and no trial credit [51], and the smallest top-up is $10 [52]. UK mobiles cost $0.12 a minute against $0.10 on Yolla, and India $0.08 against $0.0239 [43][45][46]. It can't call emergency numbers [51], rented numbers exist only for the US, Canada and Puerto Rico [53], and its browser-calling page says 145+ countries while its rates page says 165 destinations [50][43].
Yolla is cheaper on those routes and sells credit from $4 [45], but its app sign-up asks for a phone number confirmed by a text or a validation call [54], and its browser dialer makes outgoing calls only [55]. For every service scored side by side, see the ranking on the home page.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make free calls online without signing up?
Yes, on two dialers I checked. PopTox needs no account or payment [5], and Call2Friends allows a free call once a day without registration [8]. Both cap free use, and PopTox shows a shared number instead of yours [7]. Joining a WhatsApp call link as a guest also needs no account, but someone with WhatsApp has to send you the link [11].
How can I call a mobile phone online for free?
For a short call, use a free web dialer; for US and Canadian mobiles, use Google Voice or TextNow if you live there. PopTox lists US, UK, Indian and Mexican numbers as free [24], and Call2Friends gives 120 seconds to US numbers and 180 seconds to the UK [9]. For longer calls to mobiles abroad, a pay-per-minute dialer costs cents a minute.
Can I make a free call without downloading anything?
Yes. PopTox, Call2Friends, Google Voice, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams (free) and WhatsApp Web all run in a browser tab, though WhatsApp Web must be linked to an account registered with a mobile number [15]. PopTox says it works in Chrome, Safari or Firefox on a PC, Mac or smartphone [5], and Google Voice supports Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari [3].
Is there a free online calling site with no time limit?
Between apps, yes. WhatsApp Web calls have "no time limits" [10], and Google Meet allows 1:1 calls of up to 24 hours on a personal account [13]. For calls to phones, I found none I could confirm: a free Call2Friends call to the US stops at 120 seconds [9], and PopTox publishes no length limit but allows 5 free calls a day to the same number [6].
Can I make free online calls from my phone's browser?
Yes, on some web dialers. PopTox says it runs in Chrome, Safari or Firefox on a PC, Mac or smartphone [5]. WhatsApp Web calling, by contrast, is supported only on Windows, Linux and macOS [12], so on a phone WhatsApp calls go through its app. Whichever dialer you use, allow the microphone when the mobile browser asks, or the other person won't hear you.
Are WhatsApp Web calls free, and can they reach a landline?
They are free, with no time limit, and end-to-end encrypted [10], though still rolling out to accounts gradually [12]. They can't reach a normal landline or mobile: every WhatsApp calling page I read describes calls to WhatsApp contacts or to guests who open a call link [31]. To ring a landline, you need a service connected to the phone network.
Is TextNow free to use on a computer?
For residents of the US and Canada, mostly yes. The free plan includes unlimited US and Canadian calls [20], and TextNow says you can call from a browser [22]. It is funded by ads its terms forbid you to block [2]. Most calls abroad need paid credit, from $0.01 a minute to India, though TextNow lists Mexico and the UK as free [23].
Can I use Google Voice for free calls if I am not in the US?
No. Google says Google Voice is only available in the US and that its credit is sold only in US dollars [1]. Sign-up also sends a verification code to a phone number [18], and new numbers go through an ID check [4]. Outside the US, the free options are app-to-app calls and capped web dialers; my notes on Google Voice abroad cover travel and moving.
Why does a free online call show a strange number?
Because most free dialers don't show yours. PopTox displays 218-414-1141 on every outgoing call [7], so the person sees an unknown US number. Globfone uses the number you verified by SMS [30], and Call2Friends shows your own number only after you verify it in an account with a positive balance [56]. Send the person a message first so they pick up.
TwinPhone FAQ
Does TwinPhone have free calls or a free trial?
Do I need a phone number or a SIM to use TwinPhone?
No. You sign up with an email or a Google account, with no card and no phone number, and call from Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave or Safari [50]. By default, the person you call sees a shared number that can't be called back [58]; a rented US, Canadian or Puerto Rico number, from $3.19 a month [53], or your own verified mobile, for $1 a month [58], can show instead.
How do TwinPhone's rates compare with the free options?
