Caller ID

VoIP caller ID: which number people see when you call from a browser

Part of: Is VoIP safe? What a browser call protects and what it exposes

TL;DR

A call from a browser shows whichever number the service is allowed to send: a shared number used for many callers, a number the service gives or rents you, or your own mobile once you prove it is yours with a code. Only the last two let people call you back. It is one of the limits I flag in my privacy and safety checks on browser calling.

Key facts

What number does the person see when I call from a browser?

One of four things, and the service decides which: a shared number it uses for many callers, a number it gives or rents you, your own mobile once you have proved it is yours, or, on app-to-app calls, your account in that app instead of a phone number. I read each service's caller ID and help pages on .

Four kinds of caller ID on browser calls (read November 2026)
Caller IDWhat the person seesCan they call you back?Services that use it
Shared numberA number that isn't yours, often the same for every userNo [2]PopTox [1]; TwinPhone by default [2]
Your verified numberYour own mobileYes, on your phoneYolla [7]; Call2Friends (paid calls, after an SMS code) and Globfone (after a code by text or call) [8][9]; TwinPhone for $1 a month [2]
A number from the serviceA number the service issues you, free or rentedYes, in your browser or the service's appsGoogle Voice [4]; TwinPhone with a rented number; Zadarma and Sonetel [10][11]
App account, no phone numberYour account in that appOnly in the same appMessenger call links, which show your Facebook name and picture [12]; WhatsApp Web, which calls only WhatsApp users [13]

Yolla's web-calling page doesn't say whether browser calls also show your number, and I found no page describing how Yolla checks it. Call2Friends documents caller ID only for paid calls, so I treat what its free call shows as unknown.

Rules explain the pattern. US carriers and interconnected VoIP providers must pass the caller's number along with every call they send to the phone network [14] and authenticate it with STIR/SHAKEN on their IP networks [15]. Twilio's SIP trunking, which links calling systems to the phone network, accepts only a caller ID that matches a Twilio number on the account or one the customer verified [16]. That is why a service with nothing of yours verified sends its own number.

Shared numbers: why people may not answer or call back

A shared number costs nothing extra, but the person sees a number they don't know, and a call back to it doesn't reach you. That suits a quick call to someone who expects it. It fails with a clinic, a landlord or a courier who may need to reach you later.

PopTox shows the same number for every caller [1]. TwinPhone uses a shared number until you rent or verify one, and says a call back to it does not reach you [2]. If I must use a shared number, I do three things:

Emergency calls are a separate problem: TwinPhone, Yolla and free Google Voice can't call emergency numbers at all [17][18][19]. My guide to emergency calls without a phone covers what does work.

How to show your own number on a browser call

Verify it with a code. Call2Friends, Globfone and TwinPhone send a code to your mobile and show the number only after you enter it. Call2Friends does this for free on paid calls, Globfone sends the code by text or call, and TwinPhone charges $1 a month [8][9][2].

  1. Open the caller ID setting: the Caller ID option in your Call2Friends account settings [8], a paid add-on in TwinPhone [2].
  2. Type your mobile with + and the country code; US and Canadian numbers are +1 and ten digits [20].
  3. Enter the code the service sends you. Call2Friends won't set a caller ID without SMS verification, because the feature "can provoke Caller ID spoofing which is against the law" [8].
  4. If you have several numbers, pick one before dialling; TwinPhone's "Call from" menu remembers the choice [2].

Abroad, it may not stick: Call2Friends warns that some countries' regulators oppose or don't support caller ID changes [8], and Dialpad, a business phone service, marks a country restricted when its lines there lack domestic caller ID, emergency calling or in-country toll-free calls [21].

To hide your number instead, US carriers must treat *67 before the number as a request to withhold it on interstate calls, a rule that doesn't apply to 911 [14]. Google Voice takes the same prefix on US numbers or hides every call with an Anonymous caller ID setting [22]; Call2Friends can't hide numbers at all [8].

Renting a number: one caller ID for calls out and calls in

A number from the service does both jobs: it shows on your outgoing calls and rings in your browser when someone calls back, while your mobile stays private. Google Voice gives one free in the US [23], and TextNow in the US and Canada [24]. Outside those two countries, every number I found costs a monthly fee.

What a number of your own costs (checked 1 November 2026)
ServiceNumbers fromMonthly costWho can get one
Google VoiceUSFree [23]US users with a phone for a text code; ID for new numbers [25][26][27]
TextNowUS, CanadaFree, with ads [24][28]US and Canadian residents; not EU or EEA residents [29]
TwinPhoneUS, Canada, Puerto RicoFrom $3.19 [3]Sign-up with an email or Google account; no ID [30][31]
Sonetel69 countries [32]From $2.00 [33]Paid plan plus ID and address proof to show it as caller ID [11]

Three caveats. Banks, payment apps and Telegram often refuse virtual numbers, as TwinPhone's own page warns [3]; why apps turn VoIP numbers down explains the checks. TwinPhone also charges $0.02 a minute for incoming calls and rings only if your balance covers a minute [34]. And it has no free tier: credit starts at $10 [17][35].

How do I receive calls on my computer?

Get a number that rings in a browser and keep its tab open. Google Voice, TextNow and TwinPhone (with a rented number) ring in the browser; WhatsApp Web rings only for calls from other WhatsApp users. Services built for outgoing calls, such as Yolla, can't receive calls [36].

Where incoming calls ring (read November 2026)
ServiceWho can call youWhere it rings
Google VoiceAnyone, on your Voice numbervoice.google.com, signed in with the window open [5]
TextNowAnyone, on your TextNow numberThe TextNow web app [37]
TwinPhoneAnyone, on a rented numberThe browser tab or iPhone app, open or signed in [34]
WhatsApp WebWhatsApp users onlyAn on-screen notification from WhatsApp Web [13]
Google FiAnyone, on your Fi numberFi's web calls page, even with the phone off; Fi customers with an Android phone only [38]
YollaNobody: outbound only [36]Nowhere

Microsoft Phone Link and carrier Wi-Fi Calling can also ring a computer, but through your phone or mobile line, not a browser tab [39][40]. I compare them in my notes on calling from a computer.

Frequently asked questions

Can the person I call see my real phone number?

Only if the service sends it, and most check it first. Call2Friends, Globfone and TwinPhone show your mobile once you confirm it with a code [8][9][2]. Yolla says it displays your number, though its pages don't say how it checks it [7]. Google Voice shows your Voice number instead [4], and PopTox one shared number for everyone [1].

Why does my browser call show a different number from the one I set?

Usually one of three reasons. You didn't pick your number before dialling; TwinPhone's "Call from" menu remembers it [2]. The call wasn't a paid one with a positive balance, which Call2Friends needs before it shows a verified number [8]. Or the destination country's regulator blocks or doesn't support changed caller IDs [8].

Can someone call me back on the number my browser call showed?

Only if it is your own number or one you rent. A verified mobile rings your phone; a Google Voice or rented TwinPhone number rings in the browser while it is open [5][34]. A shared number doesn't reach you: TwinPhone says so plainly [2], and I found no way to receive calls on PopTox.

Can I show any number I like as my caller ID?

No. TwinPhone and Call2Friends show only a number they issued or one you proved is yours [2][8], and Twilio's SIP trunking applies the same rule to the calling systems it connects [16]. In the US, causing misleading caller ID to be shown with intent to defraud, cause harm or wrongfully obtain anything of value is prohibited [6].

Can I receive calls on a computer without a phone?

Yes, with a number that rings in the browser. TextNow signs you up with just an email [28] but is meant for US and Canadian residents [29]. Google Voice needs a phone: it texts a code to an existing number and asks new users for ID [26][27]. TwinPhone signs you up with an email or Google account [30], but its numbers cost from $3.19 a month and come only from the US, Canada and Puerto Rico [3].

Do I pay to receive calls in the browser?

Google Voice's personal plan and TextNow's number are free, and neither page I read lists a charge for incoming calls [23][24]; Zadarma says incoming calls to its numbers are free [41]. TwinPhone charges $0.02 a minute from your balance, with a one-minute minimum, on top of the number fee; the caller pays their own carrier [34].

Will my name show up, or only the number?

Expect only the number, plus any name the person has saved for it; none of the personal services I read says it sends a caller name. Quo, a business phone service, offers caller ID names only to paying businesses with a Tax ID and an approved US carrier registration [42]. Messenger call links differ: they show your Facebook profile name and picture [12].

What happened to Skype's caller ID?

Microsoft stopped new caller ID setups on 5 May 2025, shut down existing ones on 15 February 2026 and ended all Skype Number subscriptions in May 2026 [43]. Teams Free, which replaced Skype, has no paid calling plans [43], so a recognisable number on browser calls now means one of the options above. What became of Skype Numbers covers porting and refunds.
