Browser or app
Browser vs app calling: when a tab is enough and when to install
TL;DR
For outgoing calls, a browser tab does nearly everything an app does, with nothing to install and a microphone permission for one site. An app is better when you must be reachable, because the web dialers I checked ring only in an open tab, if at all. Every service I compared, side by side shows who offers a web dialer, an app or both.
Key facts
- The US App Store lists WhatsApp's iPhone app at 417.8 MB[1] and Google Voice's at 240.2 MB[2] (checked ).
- Google Voice rings on a computer only while you are signed in with the browser window open[3] (checked ).
- Yolla Web places outgoing calls only, and free Yolla-to-Yolla calls work only between the mobile apps[4] (checked ).
- Chrome's Energy Saver stops eligible background tabs on battery, but not tabs playing audio or running video calls[5] (checked ).
What actually differs between a browser and an app?
The call travels the same way in both: over the internet to the provider, then onto the phone network. What changes is everything around it: how much you install, which microphone permissions you grant, whether you can be reached while the window is closed, how the system treats it in the background, and where you buy credit.
| Point | Browser tab | Installed app |
|---|---|---|
| Install | Nothing: WebRTC is built in[6] | 39.3 to 417.8 MB for the four iPhone apps I checked[7][1] |
| Microphone | Per site, HTTPS only[8]; can be allowed once[9] | Granted once, for the whole app[10] |
| Incoming calls | Only while the tab is open and signed in, if at all[3][4] | Can ring while the app is closed[11] |
| Background | Idle tabs may be deactivated; tabs with an active call may be spared[5] | On iPhone, the system wakes the app when a call arrives[11] |
| Credit | Bought on the provider's website | In some apps, through the App Store at prices that can differ[12] |
Installed SIP softphones are a third option; see softphones compared with web phones.
How much do you have to install?
In a browser, nothing beyond the browser you already have, as long as it is a recent version. An app adds tens or hundreds of megabytes and a minimum system version, which can rule out an older phone. Some services skip the browser and work only in their app. Official listings showed these figures on .
| Service | iPhone app size | iPhone app needs | Browser version needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Voice | 240.2 MB[2] | iOS 26.1 or later[2] | Current or previous Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox (Firefox on Windows and Mac only)[13] |
| 417.8 MB[1] | iOS 15.1 or later[1] | Chrome or Edge 100+, Firefox 115+, Safari 15+[14] | |
| TwinPhone | 39.3 MB[7] | iOS 17.0 or later[15] | Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave or Safari[16] |
| Yolla | 110.6 MB[17] | iOS 15.0 or later[18] | Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge[4] |
Sizes from each app's US App Store page; they change with updates.
Talk360 has no desktop app for Windows or Mac, though some Apple silicon Macs can install its iPad version[19]. WhatsApp Web needs no install, but it must be linked to a WhatsApp account on a phone[20].
Which permissions does each one ask for?
A web dialer asks for the microphone site by site, and only on HTTPS pages; an installed app asks once, for everything it does. Either way, the operating system must first let the browser or the app use the microphone, and on a work computer an administrator may decide for you.
- One-time grants. Chrome offers Allow while visiting the site, Allow this time or Never allow, and a site can't start recording while you are in a different tab or app[9].
- The system layer. macOS has a microphone switch for each app, browsers included[10]; Windows needs Let desktop apps access your microphone turned on[21].
- Notifications. WhatsApp's help asks you to let web.whatsapp.com send notifications and to give the browser notification permission in the operating system[22].
- Work computers. An administrator can set Chrome's microphone settings so that you can't change them[9].
Can a browser tab ring like a phone app?
Only while it is open. The web dialers I checked that take incoming calls ring in an open, signed-in tab, and their help pages describe no way to ring once it is closed. An installed phone app can ring even when it is closed, like an ordinary call[11].
- Google Voice: only while you are signed in with the browser window open[3].
- TwinPhone: a rented number rings in the open, signed-in tab or the iPhone app, and only if the balance covers one minute; missed calls are emailed, up to three a day[23].
- Yolla: Yolla Web is outbound only[4].
- WhatsApp: WhatsApp Web shows an incoming call on screen[24], and the Mac app can show call notifications even when it is closed[25].
On iPhone, calling apps lean on the system: PushKit wakes the app when a call arrives[11], and CallKit shows the Phone app's own call screen[26]. If a missed call matters, keep the app on your phone.
Keeping a dialer tab ready
Does a browser tab drain more battery than an app?
I found no battery figures for either version from any provider I checked, so I can't say one drains less. What browsers do document is how they treat background tabs: they slow idle ones down to save power but leave tabs with audio or a live WebRTC connection running[27].
Chrome's Energy Saver, which switches on when the laptop is unplugged or low on battery, spares tabs with video calls or audio[5]. The weak spot is the idle tab: Memory Saver deactivates tabs you are not using[5], and a deactivated dialer cannot ring.
Does a call cost the same in the browser and in the app?
Usually yes, because on the services I checked the web dialer and the app draw on one account and one balance. The differences sit at the edges: where you can buy credit, at what price, and which free features work only between the mobile apps.
| Service | Web and app | Where they differ |
|---|---|---|
| Google Voice | One number on the web and mobile[28] | Paid plans can't be bought as an in-app purchase[29] |
| TwinPhone | One account in the browser and the iPhone app[15] | In-app credit is billed at App Store prices, which can differ[12] |
| Yolla | Account and balance shared[4] | Free Yolla-to-Yolla calls only between mobile apps[4] |
Can you call without installing an app, for free?
Yes, within limits. A browser can make free calls to other WhatsApp users through WhatsApp Web, free US and Canada calls through Google Voice or TextNow if you live there, and a few capped calls a day to phone numbers through free web dialers. Each comes with a condition.
- WhatsApp Web: calls to your WhatsApp contacts are free[24], but the account lives on a phone[20] and web calling is still rolling out[22].
- Google Voice and TextNow: Google Voice's no-charge plan includes unlimited domestic calls[30] but works only in the US[31]; TextNow offers free unlimited calling to the US and Canada[32], paid for by ads[33], to US and Canadian residents[34].
- Free web dialers: PopTox allows the same number 5 times a day[35] with a shared caller ID[36]; Call2Friends gives one or two free calls a day per IP address[37].
I track these caps in free online calls and their limits. Carrier Wi-Fi Calling is something else: a feature of your mobile line that you switch on in the phone's settings, where the carrier supports it[38]; see what carrier Wi-Fi Calling actually is.
When is an app the better choice?
Install the app when calls must reach you while the window is closed, when a service has no web dialer, or when its web version lacks a feature you need. Stay in the browser when you can't install software, use a computer the service makes no app for, or mostly call out.
Choose the app when
- You must be reachable all day: push-based calling apps ring when closed[11].
- There is no web dialer: Rebtel is an app for international calls[39], and its website handles the account rather than the calling[40].
- The web client lacks a feature: Zoom's end-to-end meeting encryption is not supported in its web app[41], and WhatsApp suggests its Windows or Mac app when web calls fail[22].
Stay in the browser when
- Your laptop blocks installs: WhatsApp pitches web calling at people on work laptops that don't allow app downloads[42].
- You use a Chromebook or Linux: Google Voice supports Chrome OS[13], WhatsApp Web supports Linux[14], and TwinPhone lists Chrome on Chromebooks and Chrome, Firefox or Brave on Linux[16].
- You want a middle ground: a progressive web app is built on web technology but can be installed and run in the background[43]; Dialpad's is Chrome-only[44].
TwinPhone, which sponsors this site, is built around the browser: sign-up needs only an email or Google account, not a phone number[16], and its iPhone app is optional[15]. Against that, it has no free calls or trial credit[45], a $10 minimum top-up[12], numbers only in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico[46], and higher UK and Indian mobile rates than Yolla[47][48][49]. Its pages say 145+ countries in one place and 165 destinations in another[16][47].
Frequently asked questions
Is it safer to call from a browser or from an app?
Neither is safer by default. A browser lets a site use the microphone only on an HTTPS page and only after you allow it[8], and WebRTC must encrypt the audio it sends[52]. An app keeps its microphone access until you switch it off in the system settings[10]. In both, the last leg of a call to a phone number follows the phone carrier's own security[53].
Can I receive calls in my browser when the tab is closed?
Not on the web dialers I checked. Google Voice rings on a computer only while you are signed in with the browser window open[3], TwinPhone needs its tab or iPhone app open or signed in, though it emails missed calls[23], and Yolla Web takes no incoming calls at all[4]. To be reachable at any time, install the provider's phone app.
Does calling from a browser use more battery than an app?
I found no published comparison from any provider, so I can't say which drains less. Browsers slow down idle background tabs to save power, but not tabs playing audio or holding a WebRTC connection[27]. Chrome's Energy Saver also spares tabs with video calls or audio, and it switches on only when the laptop is unplugged or low on battery[5].
Can I call from my phone's browser instead of installing an app?
With some services. Yolla Web works on phones and tablets as well as computers[4], and TwinPhone lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave and Safari on iPhone and Android[16]. WhatsApp lists only Windows, Linux and macOS for WhatsApp Web[14]. Incoming calls are the catch: TwinPhone rings only in an open or signed-in tab or app[23], so if you need to be reachable, install the app.
Do the app and the browser version share my number and balance?
Can I make free Wi-Fi calls online without an app?
Partly. On any internet connection, WhatsApp Web calls your WhatsApp contacts for free[24], and free web dialers such as PopTox allow up to five calls a day to the same phone number[35]. Carrier Wi-Fi Calling is different: it is a feature of your mobile line that you switch on in your phone's settings, where the carrier supports it[38], not something you open in a browser.
Is Phone Link the same as calling from a browser?
No. Phone Link is a Windows app that relays calls from your own Android phone or iPhone over Bluetooth, so the phone must stay within Bluetooth range with Bluetooth on[54]. A web dialer uses its own account instead, and TwinPhone, for one, works on devices without an active SIM[53]. I compare the two in Phone Link versus a web dialer.
