Calling the Philippines
How to call the Philippines from the US: what to dial and what it costs
Part of: How to make international calls online: dialing, rates and free options
TL;DR
From a US phone, dial 011, then the Philippines' country code 63, then the number without its leading 0, so a mobile written 0917 123 4567 becomes 011 63 917 123 4567 [1][1][2]. In a browser dialer, type +63 instead of 011 63. Paid web dialers charged from $0.107 to $0.36 a minute on the rate cards I read [3][4]; my guide to international calls from a browser covers other countries.
Key facts
- The Philippines' country code is 63 [5], the US exit code is 011 [1], and the domestic leading 0 is never dialed from abroad [1] (checked ).
- Landlines with area code 02, in and around Metro Manila, have had 8 digits since 6 October 2019 [6] (checked ).
- Google Voice lists $0.11 a minute to Philippine landlines and $0.12 to mobiles [7]; TwinPhone lists $0.36 for both [4] (checked ).
- WhatsApp Web calls to the Philippines are free, but only to people who use WhatsApp [8] (checked ).
How do you dial the Philippines from the US?
Dial 011, the US exit code, then 63, the Philippines' country code, then the number without its leading 0 [1][1]. That 0 is a trunk prefix for calls inside the country and is never dialed from abroad [1]. In a browser dialer or on a smartphone, type +63 where a desk phone needs 011 63.
- Delete the leading 0. A mobile written 0917 123 4567 becomes 917 123 4567, a 10-digit number [2]. A Manila landline written (02) 8123 4567 becomes 2 8123 4567 [6].
- From a US phone, dial 011 63 first, then those digits [1][5].
- In a browser dialer, skip 011. Type +63 and the number. Google Voice's web app, for example, asks for the country code right before the number [9].
| Calling | Written locally | From a US phone | In a browser dialer |
|---|---|---|---|
| A mobile | 0917 XXX XXXX | 011 63 917 XXX XXXX | +63 917 XXX XXXX |
| A Manila landline | (02) XXXX XXXX | 011 63 2 XXXX XXXX | +63 2 XXXX XXXX |
| Another landline | 0, area code, number | 011 63, area code, number | +63, area code, number |
917 is one of many mobile prefixes. Formats from Smart [2] and PLDT [6], read on .
Why do some Manila numbers have 7 digits and others 8?
Manila-area landlines moved to 8 digits on 6 October 2019, on an order from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) [6]. Each operator put one digit in front of the old 7: 8 for PLDT, 7 for Globe, 5 for Eastern Telecom and 3 for Bayantel [6]. A number with only 7 digits after the 02 is an old listing.
| Old number's operator | Add in front | Dial from the US |
|---|---|---|
| PLDT | 8 | 011 63 2 8, then the 7 digits |
| Globe (Innove) | 7 | 011 63 2 7, then the 7 digits |
| Eastern Telecom | 5 | 011 63 2 5, then the 7 digits |
| Bayantel | 3 | 011 63 2 3, then the 7 digits |
The change covered Metro Manila, Rizal, San Pedro in Laguna and Bacoor in Cavite [6].
Old formats survive even on operator pages: on , Smart's help page on calling home while roaming still showed a Manila landline as 2 plus 7 digits [2]. A mobile prefix no longer proves the network either, because people can keep their number when they switch networks [10]. That matters on dialers that price Globe and Smart mobiles differently.
How do you call the Philippines online from a browser?
To call an ordinary Philippine landline or mobile online, use a web dialer that connects to the phone network; most bill per minute from prepaid credit. If the person uses WhatsApp, WhatsApp Web reaches them for free. On a dialer, allow the microphone when the browser asks, then type +63 and the number without its 0.
Web dialers that ring Philippine phones
Google Voice, Yolla and TwinPhone all call phones abroad from a browser tab [9][11][12]. Google Voice personal accounts work only in the US [13], and a new number needs a phone number for a text code plus a government ID check [14][15].
Yolla's web dial pad shows the rate before each call [11], but its app asks for your phone number at sign-up [16]. TwinPhone signs you up with an email or Google account and no phone number [12]. TextNow's rate search, which I ran in Chrome from outside the US on , showed the Philippines from $0.14 a minute; credit is added in the app, and the page doesn't say whether it works in the web client [17].
WhatsApp Web or Messenger, if the person uses them
WhatsApp announced calls in WhatsApp Web on 28 July 2026 [18]; they are free even to another country, though the feature is still reaching accounts gradually [8]. Messenger voice calls also run in a browser at facebook.com/messages [19]. Neither offered calls to ordinary phone numbers on any page I read; whether WhatsApp can call landlines is covered separately.
Free web dialers
PopTox's Philippines page says calls to mobiles and landlines are free [20], within its limit of 5 free calls a day to one number and with a shared US caller ID [21][22]; I found no stated limit on call length. Call2Friends' free call skips this route: its free-destinations list had no Philippines row when I read it [23].
Before you pay a lesser-known dialer, check who runs it: StartACall's terms still contain a template placeholder, HelloAirDial's terms name no company, and MySecondLine's home page shows placeholder text [24][25][26]. What I look at before typing a number into a free dialer is on the safety page.
How much does it cost to call the Philippines from the US?
On the rate cards I read on , paid browser dialers charged from $0.107 to $0.36 a minute for the Philippines [3][4]. Google Voice had the lowest paid landline rate, $0.11 [7]. Mobile and landline rates were close on Google Voice and TwinPhone, while Yolla charged less for mobiles [27] and Call2Friends priced them by network.
| Service | Landline | Mobile | 20 minutes to a mobile | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TextNow | From $0.14, no landline/mobile split [17] | From $0.14 | From $2.80 | Credit added in the app |
| Google Voice | $0.11 [7] | $0.12 | $2.40 | US accounts only [13] |
| TwinPhone | $0.36 [4] | $0.36 | $7.20 | $10 minimum top-up [28] |
| Yolla | From $0.18 [27] | From $0.144 | From $2.88 | Outbound only [11] |
| PopTox | Listed as free [20] | Listed as free | Free; no length limit published | 5 free calls a day per number [21] |
| Call2Friends | $0.167 [3] | $0.174; Globe $0.107, Smart $0.19 | $2.14 to $3.80 | $5 minimum payment [29] |
| WhatsApp Web | Not offered | Free on WhatsApp | Free | WhatsApp users only |
Rows follow my overall comparison, not price. The 20-minute column is my arithmetic; TwinPhone and Call2Friends round up to whole minutes [28][3].
TwinPhone, which sponsors this site, costs the most on this route: $0.36 a minute is three times Google Voice's mobile rate [4][7]. It has no free tier, can't dial emergency numbers [30], and claims 145+ countries on one page but 165 destinations on its rates page [12][4]. In return it asks for no phone number at sign-up [12], keeps credit with no expiry [28], and rents US, Canadian and Puerto Rico numbers that ring in the browser, though no Philippine ones [31].
If you call for about two hours a month, an app plan can cost less per minute: Rebtel sells 120 minutes to the Philippines for $12 a month [32], $0.10 a minute if you use them all, but calls run in its phone app, not a browser [33]. Why rates differ so much by route has its own explainer.
Which way of calling the Philippines fits your situation?
Start with who you are calling. Relatives on WhatsApp cost nothing to reach from WhatsApp Web. A landline, an office or a mobile without WhatsApp usually needs a paid web dialer, and the spread is wide: a 20-minute mobile call ran from $2.14 to $7.20 on the cards I read.
- The person uses WhatsApp: WhatsApp Web, free [8].
- You already have Google Voice: the lowest paid landline rate I found, $0.11 [7].
- You often call a Globe mobile: Call2Friends, at $0.107 a minute [3], as long as the number is still on Globe.
- You want your own number to show: Call2Friends, on paid calls once you verify the number [34].
- You won't give a phone number at sign-up: TwinPhone, which takes an email or Google account, at the highest per-minute price here [12].
- You call for two hours or more a month: a monthly app plan such as Rebtel's [32].
Frequently asked questions
What is the country code for the Philippines?
Do I drop the 0 when I call a Philippine number from the US?
Yes. The leading 0 is a trunk prefix for calls inside the Philippines, and the ITU's dialling rules say it must not be dialed from abroad [1]. So 0917 123 4567 becomes 011 63 917 123 4567, and (02) 8123 4567 becomes 011 63 2 8123 4567. Keep the 0 after 63 and the number has one digit too many.
How do I call the US from the Philippines?
From a Philippine phone, dial 00, the exit code there, then 1 and the 10-digit US number [1][1]. The 1 is the US country code. If a relative in the Philippines wants to reach you without paying per minute, the free ways to reach a US number from abroad lists the options.
Can I call the Philippines for free from a computer?
Is it cheaper to call a Philippine landline or a mobile?
It depends on the dialer. Google Voice lists $0.11 for landlines and $0.12 for mobiles [7], and TwinPhone $0.36 for both [4]. Yolla is cheaper to mobiles, from $0.144 against $0.18 [27]. Call2Friends prices mobiles by network: $0.107 for Globe, $0.19 for Smart [3]. Rebtel's pay-as-you-go credit in its app runs the other way, $0.1319 for landlines against $0.1924 for mobiles [32].
Will my relative in the Philippines see my number when I call from a browser?
Only on some services. Call2Friends shows your number on paid calls once you verify it [34]. Yolla says it displays your number [35], but its web-calling page doesn't say which number browser calls show. PopTox shows one fixed US number [22], and TwinPhone a shared number that can't be called back unless you rent a number or verify your mobile for $1 a month [36]. A message before the call helps. Caller ID on browser calls has the details.
